What Makes This Church Special?

The Church of the Holy Trinity has many interesting features from when it was built.

Inside the Church

  • Wooden Screen: There's a wooden screen, called a tympanum, between the main part of the church (the nave) and the area near the altar (the chancel).
  • Royal Arms: This wooden screen shows the Royal Arms from 1624. These are like a special symbol for the King or Queen at that time.
  • Church Leaders' Symbols: You can also see the symbols of the Bishop of Bath and Wells and the Archbishop of Canterbury from that era.
  • Old Benches: The church has original wooden benches, called pews. They are in a style called Jacobean, which was popular during the time of King James I.
  • Stone Pulpit: There's a large stone pulpit, which is where the priest gives sermons. It's in an Elizabethan style, from the time of Queen Elizabeth I.
  • Font Cover: The cover for the font, used for baptisms, is also from a similar old time.

Memorials and History

  • Henry Southworth: Inside the church, there's a beautiful monument made of black and white marble. It remembers Henry Southworth, who was the local Lord of the Manor (a very important person in the area). He died in 1625 and helped pay for the church to be built.
  • Edward Blair Michell: In the churchyard, there's a special stone put up in 2002 for Edward Blair Michell. He lived from 1843 to 1926. He was famous for training falcons (birds of prey). He even wrote a great book about it called "The Art And Practice of Hawking" in 1900. His house is right across the road from the church.
