From Crossroads to Community

Long ago, Churchville was known as Lower Cross Roads. This was because it connected important towns like Bel Air, Aberdeen, and Havre de Grace. The community started as a farming area. It is known for its many beautiful churches. Some of these include Churchville Presbyterian Church, Smith's Chapel United Methodist Church, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

Famous Families and Trees

Churchville was once home to the Archer family. They were a very important family in Maryland and United States history. Their old home, called Medical Hall, is still in Churchville today. Several members of the Archer family are buried at Churchville Presbyterian Church.

Churchville is also home to a special tree. It is a Little-leaf Linden tree. This tree is the biggest of its kind in the entire country! It was added to the list of American Champion Trees in 2018.

Historic Spots and a Fun Motto

Several places in Churchville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include Best Endeavor, Church of the Holy Trinity, Churchville Presbyterian Church, Finney Houses Historic District, Medical Hall Historic District, and Webster's Forest.

The community has a fun motto: "We've got corn, we've got straw, welcome to Churchville, yee-haw!" This saying comes from Churchville's farming past. No one is quite sure exactly when or how the motto started.

A TV Show Connection

An old gas station in central Churchville was used for a scene in the Netflix TV series House Of Cards. This happened in 2016.

Notable People from Churchville

  • John Archer (1741–1810) was born in Churchville. He was the first person in the United States to receive a medical diploma. He also served as a United States Congressman for Maryland.
  • Stevenson Archer (1786–1848) was John Archer's son. He was also born in Churchville. He became a United States Congressman and the Chief Justice of the Maryland Court of Appeals.
  • Stevenson Archer (1827–1898) was the grandson of John Archer. He was also born in Churchville and served as a United States Congressman.
