Ciaran Hope (born on August 4, 1974) is an Irish composer. He writes music for orchestras, choirs, and movies. You might have heard his music in Hollywood films like Screw Cupid and Truth About Kerry. He also created the peaceful soundtrack for The Letters, a movie about the life of Mother Teresa.

Ciaran Hope has also worked a lot in modern music. He has written a violin concerto for Cora Venus Lunny. He also wrote a clarinet quartet for the Czech Clarinet Quartet. His songs have been performed by choirs around the world, including Pfizerphonics and Ireland's 2016 choir of the year, Voci Nuove.

Ciaran Hope's Life and Music Journey

Early Life and Education

Ciaran Hope grew up in a village called Dunboyne in County Meath, Ireland. Music was a big part of his life from a young age. His mother, Kitty, played the violin and viola. She also taught music at the DIT College of Music. His sister, Grainne, is a professional cellist.

Ciaran started studying music early. He became very interested in the clarinet and composing music when he was a teenager. He went to school at Castleknock College. After that, he studied Mathematics and Engineering at Trinity College Dublin.

While in college, Ciaran continued to study composition. He learned from Ladislav Kubik at the Czech American Summer Music Institute in the Prague Conservatory. In 1998, he earned a master's degree in Engineering and Music from Trinity College Dublin.

Starting a Career in Film Music

Ciaran won the IMRO Prize for composition for his clarinet piece Diptych. After this, he moved to Los Angeles. He attended the UCLA Film Scoring Program on a special scholarship called a Fulbright Scholarship.

In 1999, he worked on the music for the Hollywood movie The Insider. This film was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award!

Awards and Collaborations

In 2012, two of his movie scores were nominated for awards. Truth About Kerry (from 2010) and End of the Innocents (from 2011) both received nominations for a gold medal. This was for Excellence in their categories at the Park City Film Music Festival.

Also in 2012, Ciaran helped the Irish band Senakah. He created the string arrangements for their album Human Relations. This album was produced by Cranberries guitarist and songwriter Noel Hogan. It was recorded in Limerick, Ireland.

Composer Residencies and The Letters

Ciaran Hope has spent time as a "composer-in-residence." This means he lived and worked at special places for artists. He stayed at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in County Monaghan and the Cill Rialaig artist's retreat in County Kerry.

In 2013, he spent four months as the composer-in-residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. There, he worked on several new pieces of music. These included music for children's orchestras and an opera about Robert Emmet.

In 2013, he also started working on the music for the Hollywood film The Letters. This movie is about the life of Mother Teresa. The music was recorded with the Macedonian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Skopje, Macedonia. The New Dublin Voices choir recorded their parts in Dublin, Ireland. The film was released in the US in December 2015. His music from the film has also been performed live, including in the Pantheon in Rome.

Recent Work

Sony Classical released a soundtrack album for The Letters in 2016. It included 23 of Ciaran Hope's music tracks. After this, Ciaran took a break from his music career. He went back to school and completed an MBA degree at the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in 2017.

In 2021, Ciaran announced that he had taken a senior role at Ernst & Young. He works as a Director in Innovation and Experience Design there.

Personal Life

Ciaran Hope is married to the Irish actress Rebecca O'Mara. He is also the brother-in-law of actor Jason O'Mara.
