About Cicely Hey's Life and Art

Early Life and Art Studies

Cicely Hey was born in Faringdon, a town in Oxfordshire, England. She loved art from a young age. She first went to art school in Brussels, Belgium. After that, she continued her studies in London, England. She attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the famous Slade School of Art.

Working with Walter Sickert

Cicely was not only a painter and a draughtsman (someone who draws), but she also worked as a model for other artists. She modeled for the famous artist Walter Sickert. He painted her portrait many times in the early 1920s. They first met in January 1923 at a lecture. Cicely collected tickets for this event.

Cicely posed for Sickert every day for two months in 1923. They also stayed friends afterwards. Sickert created many drawings and paintings of her. One famous painting was a double portrait of them called Death and the Maiden. The last painting Sickert made with Cicely showed her as the sister in The Raising of Lazarus. Sickert gave Cicely many of his artworks. She later gave these artworks to the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester before she passed away.

Exhibitions and Marriage

When Cicely met Sickert, she lived in a house in Bloomsbury, London. She shared this house with others, including Robert R. Tatlock. He was an art critic and editor of the Burlington Magazine. Cicely later married Robert.

Cicely started showing her art in group exhibitions from 1928. She exhibited with groups like the London Group and the New English Art Club. Her first solo art show was in 1933 at the Lefevre Gallery in London. This show included drawings of writers and artists. These included Sickert, Rebecca West, and Duncan Grant. In 1938, Cicely showed a portrait of Sir Adrian Boult at the London Group exhibition.

Moving to Wales and Model Making

In 1941, Cicely Hey moved to Wales. She settled in Llysfaen in north Wales. Here, she began to focus on making models. She used materials like terracotta, wire, and paper mache. She created tiny figures from different historical periods. These figures often wore costumes that were historically accurate.

Examples of her work were shown in a 1955 exhibition by the Arts Council of Wales. This exhibition traveled around. She also exhibited with the North Wales Group from 1956 to 1968. Between 1957 and 1961, Cicely often showed her art at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. In 1964, she had a solo exhibition called Period Figures. This show was at the Geffrye Museum in London and also toured.

The Llanover Hall arts centre in Cardiff held an exhibition of her drawings in 2006. Her artworks are also kept in several places. These include the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea, the Contemporary Arts Society for Wales, and the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading.
