The Story of Cicero's Beginning

How Cicero Became a Town

Cicero became its own town in 1871. Before that, it was part of a larger area called Black Creek. People living in the northern part of Black Creek wanted their own town. They asked for this in January 1871.

There was a small problem. Black Creek had some money it owed for building a railroad. So, a special group of lawmakers from Wisconsin helped out. They decided that Cicero would take on $5,000 of this debt. Black Creek would keep the remaining $7,000.

The very first meeting to choose leaders for the new town of Cicero happened on April 4, 1871.

Where Did the Name 'Cicero' Come From?

The town of Cicero got its name from another place: Cicero, New York. The person who was in charge of the new town had lived there before.
