About Cicero C. Hammock
Cicero C. Hammock was born in Walton County, Georgia. When he was younger, he joined the United States Army. He fought in the Mexican–American War, which was a conflict between the United States and Mexico. During this war, he served alongside another person who would later become a mayor, Captain Allison Nelson.
After the war ended, Hammock moved to Oglethorpe County, Georgia. There, he got married. Not long after, he decided to move to the growing city of Atlanta.
Life During the Civil War
When the American Civil War started, Cicero Hammock joined the Confederate States Army. He became a commissioned officer, which means he was a leader in the army, not just a regular soldier.
After the War
Once the Civil War was over, Hammock returned to Atlanta. He started a new career as a merchant, which is someone who buys and sells goods. He worked with a company called Langston, Crane & Hammock. Later, he got into the real estate trade. This means he helped people buy and sell land and buildings. His office was in a well-known spot in Atlanta called Five Points.
Mayor of Atlanta
Cicero Hammock became mayor during the Reconstruction era. This was a time when the Southern states were being rebuilt after the Civil War. During his first time as mayor, he helped start Atlanta's waterworks system. This system brought clean water to the city's homes and businesses.
His second time as mayor was special because it was the first time the mayor served a two-year term. This happened after Atlanta changed its city charter, which is like a rulebook for how the city is run.
Even after his time as mayor, Hammock continued to serve the city. From the mid-1880s until he passed away, he was the president of the city's water commission. This group helped manage the city's water supply.
