Cihat Arman was a famous Turkish football player and coach. He was born in Istanbul on July 16, 1915, and passed away there on May 14, 1994. Cihat Arman was a talented goalkeeper. He also coached the Turkish national football team.
He played for Turkey in the 1936 Summer Olympics and the 1948 Summer Olympics. As a coach, he helped Turkey qualify for the 1950 World Cup. However, the team could not go because of money problems after World War II. Fans called him "Yellow Canary" because he always wore a yellow sweater. This nickname later inspired the famous "Yellow Canaries" symbol for the Fenerbahçe football club.

Cihat Arman's Early Career
Cihat Arman started playing club football when he was just 15 years old. His first team was Ankaragücü. He quickly showed his skills as a goalkeeper. In 1936, he moved to a club in Istanbul called Güneş. He played there for a few years.
Joining Fenerbahçe
After the Güneş club closed down, Cihat Arman joined Fenerbahçe. This was a big step in his career. He played an amazing 308 games for Fenerbahçe. He became very well-known for his incredible saves. Fans often called him the "flying goalkeeper." This was because of his amazing, acrobatic jumps to stop goals.
The Yellow Canary Nickname
Cihat Arman always wore a bright yellow shirt during his matches. When he "flew" through the air to make a save, the yellow shirt stood out. This sight gave him the nickname "Yellow Canary." This nickname became so popular that it inspired Fenerbahçe's team nickname, "The Yellow Canaries" (Sarı Kanaryalar in Turkish). It's still their nickname today!
Playing for the National Team
During World War II, it was hard to have international sports events. Because of this, Cihat Arman played only 13 games for the Turkey national football team. He was a key player for his country. After 1949, he also became the team's captain.
Coaching the National Team
Cihat Arman didn't just play for Turkey; he also coached the national team. He led them to qualify for the 1950 World Cup. They had a big win against Syria, scoring 7–0. This was a huge achievement for Turkish football.
World Cup Withdrawal
Even though they qualified, the Turkish team could not go to the 1950 World Cup. This was due to money problems. The country was still recovering from World War II. It was a tough decision, but they had to withdraw from the tournament.
Cihat Arman's Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 1950, Cihat Arman continued his career as a football coach. He coached many different clubs in Istanbul. These included Kasımpaşa, İstanbulspor, Yeşildirek, and Beşiktaş.
He also returned to coach the Turkey national football team several times. He coached them in 1950, 1957, 1958, and 1959. Cihat Arman left a lasting mark on Turkish football, both as a player and as a coach.
