Citadel Mall is a large shopping center in Charleston, South Carolina, United States. It covers about 1,138,527 square feet (105,773 m2) of space. The mall first opened its doors on July 29, 1981. You can find it where Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and I-526 meet.

Citadel Mall has over 100 different stores. It also features four main "anchor" stores. These include the biggest Belk and Dillard's department stores in the area. You can also find Dick's Sporting Goods and the first Target store in the region. The Target store was recently updated to include a new grocery section.

In 2013, the mall faced some financial trouble. Its owner could not make mortgage payments. The bank took over the mall in 2014. A new company bought the mall in 2017.

History of Citadel Mall

The mall first opened in 1981. It was built by a company called Jacobs, Visconsi & Jacobs. Citadel Mall is located in West Ashley, a busy area of Charleston. It sits near major roads like Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Interstate 526.

When it first opened, Citadel Mall had three main stores. These were Sears, Belk, and Thalhimer's. Sears moved from downtown Charleston. Belk moved from another shopping center. Thalhimer's was a new store to South Carolina.

Changes in Stores

Over the years, the mall's stores changed a lot. In 1992, Thalhimer's store became a Dillard's. Dillard's then moved to a new, bigger building in 1994. The old Thalhimer's building was then sold to JCPenney. JCPenney used that space until 2001.

In 2001, Target bought the JCPenney building. They tore it down and built a new, one-story Target store. Around the same time, Belk also moved to a new, larger building. Belk sold its old store to a company called Parisian.

Later, Belk bought the Parisian chain of stores in 2006. Because Belk already had a store at Citadel Mall, the Parisian store closed. This building was then sold back to JCPenney. JCPenney returned to the mall in 2007.

Mall Upgrades and New Owners

In the early 2000s, the mall got a new look. A Food Court was added, and the inside was completely remodeled. The original developer, Jacobs, sold the mall to CBL & Associates Properties. In 2005, a sixth anchor store was added: Dick's Sporting Goods. It was built outside the mall, next to the movie theater.

The movie theater at the mall also saw changes. It was first a General Cinemas theater. Then it became an AMC Theatres cinema. In 2008, AMC closed this theater. A new company bought the property. They tore down the old building. A brand new, large movie theater called Citadel Mall IMAX Stadium 16 opened in 2009. It has 16 screens and stadium-style seating.

In 2013, the mall was featured on a TV show. It was "Food Court Wars" on The Food Network. Two couples competed to win a lease for a food court space.

Recent Changes

In 2013, the mall faced financial problems again. The bank took over the mall. A new company, Spinoso Real Estate Group, managed the mall for a while. They worked hard to bring in new stores. The mall is in a great spot, which makes it attractive to businesses.

In 2017, a group of local business people bought the mall for $17 million. They plan to make the mall even better. They want to add more entertainment and mixed-use areas. This could include a sports facility. The mall's management also changed to JLL - Jones Lang LaSalle.

More changes happened in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, JCPenney announced it would close its store. The building was then bought by the mall's new owners. It is now leased to the Medical University of South Carolina. It will become a medical facility.

In 2018, Sears also announced its closure. The mall's owners bought the Sears property too. They plan to change the mall into something "more grand." As part of these plans, Citadel Mall will be renamed EPIC Center. Since 2019, the former Sears store has been used by HBO for filming their TV show, The Righteous Gemstones.
