The City of Brighton was a special kind of local government area in South Australia. It was like a local council that looked after the seaside town of Brighton. It existed from 1858 until 1997.

History of Brighton's Local Council

The Corporate Town of Brighton was officially created on 25 November 1858. It was formed by separating from another council, the District Council of Brighton. That other council later changed its name to Marion to avoid confusion.

Brighton's Original Boundaries

The town's boundaries stretched from Yarrum Grove, Boundary Road, and Oaklands Road in Somerton Park in the north. To the south, they reached Kingston Park reserve, Kingston House, Scholfield Road in Kingston Park, and Arthur Street in Seacliff Park. The coastline formed its western edge. On the east, it was bordered by Brighton Road (Somerton Park), MacArthur Avenue (Hove), Winton Avenue (Hove), Neath Avenue (South Brighton), and Davenport Terrace (Seacliff Park).

First Council Members

The first people chosen to be councillors in 1858 were Francis Corbet Singleton, Pitt Cobbett, George William Chinner, William Home Popham, and William Voules Brown.

Becoming the City of Brighton

Over time, the town of Brighton grew bigger. When its population reached a certain number in the early 1900s, it officially became known as the City of Brighton.

Joining with Glenelg

In 1997, the City of Brighton joined with its northern neighbour, the City of Glenelg. Together, they formed a new council called the City of Holdfast Bay. Both Brighton and Glenelg still have civic centres for the new council.

Important Councillors

In 1919, a woman named Grace Benny was elected to the Brighton council. This was a very important moment because she became the first woman ever elected as a councillor in any local government in South Australia.
