History of Ciudad Ojeda
Ciudad Ojeda was started on January 19, 1937. It was founded by President Eleazar López Contreras. The city was built to give a new home to people from a nearby town called Lagunillas de Agua.
On November 13, 1939, a big fire sadly destroyed Lagunillas de Agua. More than 200 people lost their lives. This fire made it clear that everyone needed to move to the mainland. People think the fire started because of oil on the lake. The old houses were built on stilts over the water. One idea is that a kerosene lamp fell into the oily lake. Another idea is that an oil company accidentally caused the fire.
Why the City is Called Ciudad Ojeda
Ciudad Ojeda got its name from Alonso de Ojeda. He was a Spanish explorer. He was the first European to discover Lake Maracaibo.
