Claremore Mound is an ancient hill made of earth in what is now Rogers County, Oklahoma. It is famous for a big historical event called the Battle of Claremore Mound, also known as the Battle of Strawberry Moon. This battle happened in June 1817.

During the battle, a group of Cherokee people and their friends, led by Chief Spring Frog, attacked an Osage village. This village, called Pasuga, was located right at the bottom of Claremore Mound. Thirty-eight Osage people, including their Chief Glahmo, were killed. One hundred and four people were also taken captive. In return, Glahmo's son, Wah-tianka, led the Osage in attacks against the Cherokee for the next twenty years.

The mound is located north of a place called Sageeyah. It sits near the south bank of the Verdigris River.

What is Claremore Mound?

Claremore Mound is an earthwork mound. This means it is a hill built by people, not formed naturally. It was likely built before the year 1000 CE. The people who built it were part of the Caddoan Mississippian culture.

The top of the mound is about 784 feet (239 m) above sea level. This is like being on top of a very tall building! The flat area on top of the mound is quite large. It measures about 25 acres (100,000 m2). Around 1802, the Osage people built a village called Pasona on this flat top.

Claremore Mound's Location

The mound is in a historically important area. In the late 1830s, parts of the Cherokee reservation were set up in what was called Indian Territory. This reservation was about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the mound. Later, the modern city of Claremore grew about 7 miles (11 km) away from the mound.

How Did Claremore Get Its Name?

When European-American settlers arrived, they named both the mound and the nearby town "Clermont." This name means "clear mountain" in English. They chose this name to honor Chief Glahmo. French traders had given him the nickname Chief Clermont.

In 1874, the town asked for a post office. But there was a mistake when the name was written down. Clermont was accidentally listed as Claremore. This mistake was never fixed. So, even today, both the mound and the town are known as Claremore.
