Clarence Henry (born March 27, 1926 – died February 28, 1999) was a talented American boxer. He became famous for winning the 1948 Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. During the 1950s, he was considered one of the top heavyweight boxers in the world.

Clarence Henry's Boxing Journey

Clarence Henry was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in Los Angeles. In 1948, he won the Los Angeles Times Golden Gloves heavyweight championship. That same year, he went on to win the national Golden Gloves championship in Chicago. He even represented the United States as part of the Chicago Golden Gloves Team, defeating Fernand Bothy from Belgium.

Henry was not the biggest heavyweight, but he had a very powerful punch. He fought out of Los Angeles and won both the Heavyweight Championship of California and the Heavyweight Championship of the Pacific Coast. On June 26, 1952, Henry fought Archie Moore, who later became a world champion. Henry lost this 10-round match by a decision from the judges. At his best, Clarence Henry was ranked as the third-best heavyweight boxer in the world.

Career Challenges and Retirement

In 1949, famous former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey became Clarence Henry's manager. Later, Henry's boxing contract was owned by another person. His boxing career ended in 1954 due to issues that happened outside of the boxing ring.

Clarence Henry's Legacy

Clarence Henry's achievements in boxing were recognized when he was chosen for the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998. This was just one year before he passed away.
