The Auckland Council has a service center in Claris. Here, people can get help with things like fire permits or information about properties. The Aotea / Great Barrier Island Local Board, which helps manage the island, also has its offices nearby. Claris is also home to the island's police station.
Shops and More
You'll find the island's main airfield, Great Barrier Aerodrome, right here in Claris. It's how many people arrive and leave the island. The town also has a general store, a petrol station, and a New Zealand Post shop. There's a pharmacy and places to grab food and drinks. Claris is also important because it has the island's only medical center. It's also where the island's only working landfill is located.
Nature Around Claris
Claris is built on a fairly flat area of land. It is surrounded by gentle, rolling hills. Beautiful beaches like Kaitoke Beach and Medlands Beach are very close by.

Claris has seen some important events over the years, from dealing with fires to planning for the future.
Past Events
In January 2013, a large vegetation fire happened near Claris and Kaitoke Beach. It burned over 100 hectares of land. Because of the fire, a planned flight from the aerodrome had to move to Okiwi Airfield, which is east of Ōkiwi.
Community Planning
Between 2015 and 2019, the Aotea / Great Barrier Island Local Board looked into creating a new cemetery. After thinking about locations in Okiwi or Claris, they decided to build it in Claris.
Managing Waste
In July 2019, rules were put in place about how much rubbish people could throw away. This was because the Claris Landfill and Recycling Centre was getting full. The Auckland Council has permission to keep using the site until 2027. However, they are worried it might run out of space sooner. Visitors to the island are encouraged to take all their rubbish with them when they leave. This helps protect the island's environment.
