Approaching Great Barrier Aerodrome
View of Claris and Kaitoke Beach

Kaitoke Beach is a lovely, long sandy beach. You can find it on the east coast of Great Barrier Island in New Zealand. This island is part of the Auckland Region and sits in the Hauraki Gulf. Kaitoke Beach is famous for its golden sand and rolling sand dunes.

At the northern end of the beach, there's a small stream called Kaitoke Creek. This creek drains water from the Kaitoke Swamp. Just past a small hill, you'll find Palmers Beach. At the southern end of Kaitoke Beach, there's a place called Sugar Loaf headland. Beyond that, you can discover Medlands Beach.

The small town of Claris is very close to Kaitoke Beach. The Great Barrier Aerodrome, which is the island's airport, is also nearby. People flying in or out of the airport can often see the beach from above. Claris has useful places like a general store, a Post shop, and a petrol station.

Visiting Kaitoke Beach

You can easily get to Kaitoke Beach from Oceanview Road, which is about halfway along the beach. There's also access from Sugarloaf Road at the southern end. Here, you'll find a private campground where people can stay.

Surfing and Water Safety

Kaitoke Beach is a great spot for surfing. It offers consistent waves all year round, with both left and right-hand breaks. The beach is usually not very crowded, so there's plenty of space. The Aotea Board Riders Club sometimes holds surf competitions here when the waves are good.

It's important to know about water safety at Kaitoke Beach. There can be strong currents called rips, which can pull swimmers out to sea. Always be careful and swim between the flags if lifeguards are present. You might also see stingrays and hammerhead sharks in the water, so it's good to be aware of your surroundings.

Wildlife at the Beach

Kaitoke Beach is a very important place for some special birds. It's a nesting ground for the endangered brown teal duck. It's also home to the dotterel, another native New Zealand bird. These birds lay their eggs on the sand, so it's important to be careful not to disturb them, especially during nesting season.

Beach History

In January 2013, a large fire happened near Claris and Kaitoke Beach. The fire burned over 100 hectares of land. Because of the smoke and danger, a planned flight from the aerodrome had to be moved. The plane instead departed from Okiwi Airfield, which is east of Ōkiwi.
