The Great Barrier Aerodrome (also known as GBZ or NZGB) is the main airport on Great Barrier Island. It's a small airport located in a place called Claris. Great Barrier Island is a beautiful island in the Hauraki Gulf, off the North Island of New Zealand.

This airport is special because it's 'uncontrolled.' This means there isn't an air traffic control tower guiding planes. Instead, pilots talk to each other using radios to make sure they fly safely. You can't get airplane fuel here, so planes must carry enough fuel for their whole trip.

What is an Aerodrome?

An aerodrome is like a small airport. It's a place where aircraft can take off and land. The Great Barrier Aerodrome is important for people visiting or living on the island. It helps connect the island to the rest of New Zealand.

Getting Around the Island

The town of Claris is right next to the airport. If you arrive by plane, you can easily find ways to explore the island. There are places at the airport where you can rent cars or even bicycles. This makes it simple to start your adventure as soon as you land.

Flying In and Out

The aerodrome has two runways. One runway is made of grass. The other is a marked asphalt (bitumen) runway. It is 950 meters long and 9 meters wide.

Planes that land here need to pay a small fee. These 'landing fees' help pay for keeping the airport running. The fees are charged to the plane's owner. For private planes, it costs $20. For planes on a regular schedule, it costs $12.

Sometimes, wild pigs can be seen on the aerodrome. This is a unique challenge for the airport!

Airlines and Destinations

Several airlines fly to and from Great Barrier Aerodrome. They connect the island to bigger cities and other smaller airfields.
