Clark's Harbour is a small town in Nova Scotia, Canada. It's found on Cape Sable Island in Shelburne County. This town is famous for lobster fishing, which is its main industry. It's also known as the place where the special Cape Islander fishing boat was first built. Clark's Harbour is the southernmost town in Nova Scotia, making it one of the most southern towns in all of Canada. It's about as far south as cities like Bilbao in Spain.

Clark's Harbour Population

Clark's Harbour is a small community. In 2021, the town had a population of 725 people. This number was a little lower than in 2016. Most people in Clark's Harbour speak English as their first language.

Clark's Harbour Weather

Clark's Harbour has a special kind of weather called an oceanic climate. This means its winters are milder than other places further inland. Even though it's at the same latitude as cities like Toulouse in France, its summers are quite cool. This is because the Atlantic Ocean has a strong effect on the weather. The ocean also causes a "seasonal lag," meaning September can feel warmer during the day than July.

Clark's Harbour Economy

Clarks Hbr (10)
Cape Islanders and a traditional dory

The economy of Clark's Harbour mainly depends on the fishing industry. Lobster fishing is especially important here. Many people say that Shelburne County, where Clark's Harbour is located, is the "Lobster Capital of Canada."

Because of all the fishing, other businesses have grown too. These include places that process and package seafood. There are also companies that build boats, like the famous Cape Islander fishing boat. Lobsters caught by fishers in Clark's Harbour are sent all over the world, especially to the New England area in the United States. The traps used to catch lobsters are also built right in town.

Besides fishing, Clark's Harbour has other local businesses. These include a general store, a gas station, a pizza place, and a takeout restaurant. However, the fishing industry is by far the biggest part of the town's economy.

Clark's Harbour Library

Clark's Harbour Branch Library

The Clark's Harbour Branch Library is a local library. It is located at 2648 Main Street. This library is one of ten branches that belong to the Western Counties Regional Library system.

The library first joined this system in July 1971. However, it didn't have its own building in Clark's Harbour until March 4, 1974. The library later moved to its current spot inside the Clark's Harbour Civic Centre on December 11, 2007.

The Stone Church

The unique Stone Church

One of the most interesting places to visit in Clark's Harbour is the United Baptist Stone Church. People love to see it because of its very unique design.

Building the Stone Church began on September 5, 1921. The foundation is made from strong granite found nearby. These granite pieces are three feet thick and were all cut by hand using chisels. The walls of the church are made from cobblestones. These stones were collected from the seashore and nearby islands.

The church is quite large, measuring eighty-five feet long and fifty-five feet wide. It can seat up to five hundred people inside. The interior of the church is decorated with beautiful wood. Its windows are made of colorful stained glass.

A man named Thomas Doucette was in charge of building the Stone Church. He followed blueprints designed by an architect from Halifax, S.P. Dumaresq. Amazingly, Thomas Doucette could not read or write. He had the blueprints read to him only once, and then he started building. It took ten years to finish building this special church.
