The Claro River is a beautiful river in Chile, found in the Maule Region. It starts high up in the Andes mountains, where two smaller rivers, the Los Cajones River and the Del Planchón River, join together. The Claro River then flows until it meets the Teno River near the town of Los Queñes.
River Challenges
Volcanic Activity
In February 1991, a volcano complex called Planchón-Peteroa erupted. This volcano is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) southeast of Los Queñes. The eruptions caused ash and other materials to fall into the Claro River. This made the water dirty and sadly, many fish in the river died.
Olympic Training Ground
The Claro River has also been a special place for sports. It was once used as a training spot for the United States Olympic slalom kayak team. Slalom kayaking is a challenging sport where athletes paddle kayaks through a course of gates on moving water.
