Claudia Fontaine (born August 26, 1960 – died March 13, 2018) was a talented backing singer from Peckham, London. She was known for her powerful voice and worked with many famous musicians throughout her career.

Claudia Fontaine's Music Career

Starting as a Backing Singer

During the 1980s, Claudia Fontaine and another singer named Caron Wheeler formed a duo called Afrodiziak. Later, Naomi Thompson joined them, making it a trio. They were well-known for their amazing backing vocals. Claudia even appeared in the music video for "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)" with the group Soul II Soul.

Becoming a Solo Artist

Claudia also sang in several "lovers rock" music groups, like Mellow Rose, One Love, and True Harmony. Lovers rock is a type of reggae music. After singing in these groups, she started her own solo career. In 1981, she released a very popular lovers rock song called "Natural High".

Working with Famous Artists

Claudia Fontaine performed with many well-known artists. Some of these included The Jam, Paul Weller, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Marilyn, Madness, Neneh Cherry, The Specials, Heaven 17, Hothouse Flowers and Howard Jones. She sang background vocals on the famous song "Free Nelson Mandela" by The Special AKA.

Claudia was also the main singer on The Beatmasters' hit song "Warm Love" in 1989. This song was part of their first album, Anywayawanna. She also sang lead vocals on another Beatmasters' song called "Deeper into Harmony" from their 1992 album Life & Soul.

Touring and Live Performances

Claudia performed backing vocals for Pink Floyd during their The Division Bell Tour. You can also hear her on their live DVD and CD called Pulse. She toured with pop superstar Robbie Williams and sang backing vocals on his album Sing When You're Winning. In 2002, she sang backing vocals for Joe Cocker at a concert in London, where the famous guitarist Brian May also performed.

Claudia Fontaine passed away on March 13, 2018, at the age of 57.
