A Look Back: Clayton's History
Clayton was started in 1889. It got its name because there was a lot of clay nearby. This clay was very important for the town's early days.
In 1893, a company called the Washington Brick Company began here. This company made bricks and other things from clay. Sadly, in 1908, a big fire destroyed most of the town and the brick company.
But the people of Clayton didn't give up! They rebuilt their town. The new company was called Washington Brick, Lime, and Sewer Pipe Company. It became famous for making really good products. They even made beautiful decorative terra cotta panels. Many skilled artists from northern Italy came to Washington to help create these special panels.
