History of Clearview
Clearview, Oklahoma, was started in 1903, even before Oklahoma became a state. Three men named J.A. Roper, Lemuel Jackson, and John Grayson created the Lincoln Townsite Company. Their goal was to invite Black settlers to live there.
The town was built along the Fort Smith and Western Railroad. Clearview was part of a bigger movement where many Black towns were created. These towns gave African Americans a chance to own land, govern themselves, and become financially independent. Many people moved to Oklahoma to escape unfair laws, known as Jim Crow laws, in the southern United States. Farming quickly became the main way people made a living in Clearview.
In 1903, the Abe Lincoln Trading Company opened. This was the main store in town. It sold farming tools, things for homes, and building materials to local farmers. Clearview's economy mostly relied on growing cotton, which was the main source of income for its residents. People also grew other important crops like corn, beans, and vegetables. This helped make sure everyone had enough food and supported a strong farming economy.
As the town grew, other important places were built. The Clearview Brick Factory started in the 1900s. It made bricks for building houses, businesses, and community buildings.
The Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame celebrates the amazing work of Black teachers. These educators helped improve schools in Clearview and other similar communities. This Hall of Fame keeps the stories of these important people alive. It also acts as a place for learning about the rich history of African American education. More than 100 visitors come to the Hall of Fame each year.
