Biography of Clemente López de Osornio

Clemente López de Osornio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was baptized on November 25, 1720. His family was originally from the city.

Early Military Service

In 1736, when he was about 16, Clemente López de Osornio joined the local cavalry army. He helped defend the fort of Arrecifes from attacks by native groups. Three years later, he joined a military trip led by Captain Juan de San Martín. They traveled to an area near what is now Mar del Plata.

Important Roles and Expeditions

In 1752, Osornio became a Commissioner in the Magdalena area. This was an important role in local government. In 1765, he became the Commanding General of the militia in Buenos Aires Province. He led a trip to the Salinas Grandes, west of Bahía Blanca. On this journey, he counted the different tribes living in the area. He also organized five companies of Blandengues cavalry. These soldiers were meant to protect the southern border from attacks by native groups.

In 1766, Clemente López Osornio was appointed Alcalde de la hermandad in Magdalena. This position meant he was a local judge and police chief. His area covered many places, including what are now Avellaneda, Quilmes, Lomas de Zamora, and Almirante Brown.

Later Military Campaigns

In 1767, López de Osornio led a military trip against the Guaraní tribes. Years later, in 1775, he took part in another trip. This one was in Cairú (Tandil) and near Laguna Blanca Grande (Olavarría). This trip was against the Pampas tribes.

Life as a Rancher

López Osornio retired from the army in 1779. After that, he focused on managing his large ranch. It was called Rincón de López and was located in Chascomús, in Buenos Aires Province. He became a very wealthy landowner. In 1782, he was chosen to represent other landowners in the Cabildo porteño. The Cabildo was like the city council of Buenos Aires.

Family Life and Legacy

López Osornio married Martina Arroyo Jiménez de Paz on October 9, 1746, in Buenos Aires. They had four children: Catalina, Andres Ramón, María Magdalena, and Angel López de Osornio.

After his first wife passed away, he married María Manuela Rubio Díaz Gamiz. They were married on February 25, 1766, at the Buenos Aires Cathedral. María Manuela came from a well-known family. Clemente and María Manuela had six children: Juana Bautista, María Rafaela, Petrona Josefa, Agustina, José Silverio, and María Luisa López de Osornio.

On December 13, 1783, Clemente López de Osornio was killed. His son Andrés, his workers, and his slaves were also killed. This happened during an attack by Pampas tribes on his ranch, El Rincón de López, in Chascomús.

Clemente López de Osornio was the grandfather of Juan Manuel de Rosas. Juan Manuel de Rosas became a very famous leader. He was the Governor of Buenos Aires for many years, from 1835 to 1852.
