A Home Through the Centuries
The Clennell family first owned the land and manor of Clennell. They lived here starting in the 1200s. Imagine living in a family home for hundreds of years!
Early Days: A Little Tower
In 1541, a survey described the building. It was called 'a little tower of Percival Clennell'. This tower had just been repaired. A 'barmkin' was also being built. A barmkin was a protective wall around a castle or tower. It helped keep the people inside safe.
Growing Bigger: From Tower to Mansion
By 1715, Clennell Hall was home to Luke Clennell. He was a very important person. He was the High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1727. The house then had an old tower on the east side. It also had a double wing on the west. There was a small courtyard to the south. This courtyard had a 'handsome gateway' for entering.
In 1749, Philadelphia Clennell inherited the estate. She married William Wilkinson. He also became a High Sheriff in 1758. Later, in 1895, their great-grandson, Anthony Wilkinson, made the house much larger. He added a big new part. It was built in the 'Tudor style'. This style was popular in England many years ago.
Today, the building still includes parts of a 'pele tower' from 1589. A pele tower is a small, fortified tower. It was built to protect people from raids. The tower has been changed a lot over the years. But its old stone walls still tell a story.
