What is the Cleveland Commercial Historic District?

This historic district is also known as "Downtown Cleveland." For many years, it was the most important place in Cleveland and Bradley County. People came here to shop, meet friends, and handle government business.

The district covers a specific area. It includes parts of Central Avenue, Church Street, Inman Street, and 2nd Street SE.

Buildings in the District

The district has 65 buildings that are part of its history. Most of these buildings were built between the 1850s and the 1960s. They show different styles of architecture from those times.

Some buildings have a "Second Empire" look, which means they might have tall, fancy roofs. Others are "Italianate," with decorative windows and cornices. You can also see "Classical Revival" buildings, which look like old Greek or Roman temples. Some buildings also have "mid-century modern" details from the 1950s and 60s.

Many of these buildings are famous and are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places on their own. These include:

  • The Bradley County Courthouse Annex, which used to be a U.S. Post Office.
  • Broad Street United Methodist Church, a beautiful old church.
  • St. Luke's Episcopal Church, another historic church.
  • The Fillauer Brothers Building, an important commercial building.
  • Craigmiles Hall, a well-known hall in the downtown area.
  • The W.J. Hughes Business House, an old business building.

The district also includes the main Bradley County Courthouse, built in 1964. Other city and county government offices are located here too.

When was it recognized?

The Cleveland Commercial Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 5, 2017. This helps make sure these important buildings and the history of Downtown Cleveland are preserved for the future.
