A Long History

Early Beginnings

The Broad Street United Methodist Church started a long time ago in 1836. At first, the church members met for worship in the Bradley County Courthouse.

Before the current building was finished in 1893, the church met in four different places. For a while, it was even known as the Lea Street Methodist Episcopal Church.

During the Civil War

In 1863, during the American Civil War, the church's building was used by the Union Army. It was used as a place to keep horses and store grain.

After the war, in 1867-1868, the church built a new brick building. This new building was on the same spot where the church stands today.

The Current Building

The brick building from 1867 was taken down in 1893. Then, the church built the amazing building you see now. It was designed in a style called Romanesque Revival. This style often uses round arches and strong, heavy walls.

The inside of the church has a special layout called an Akron plan. This design helps everyone see and hear the preacher better. Over the years, more parts were added to the building in 1922 and 1968.

Historic Recognition

The Broad Street United Methodist Church building is very important. Because of its history and architecture, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This is a list of places in the United States that are worth saving.
