A Church with a Long History
The story of the Broad Street United Methodist Church started way back in 1836. That's almost 200 years ago! At first, the church members didn't have their own building. They met for worship in the Bradley County Courthouse in Cleveland.
Moving to Different Places
Before the church got its current building, the congregation moved around a lot. From 1836 until 1893, they used four different places in the city for their services. For a while, the church was even known by a different name: Lea Street Methodist Episcopal Church.
The Civil War and a New Start
During the American Civil War, which happened from 1861 to 1865, the church faced a big challenge. In 1863, the building they were using was taken over by the Union Army. Soldiers used it as a stable for horses and a granary to store grain.
After the war, the church members worked hard to build a new place. In 1867 and 1868, they built a new brick church. This new building was on the same spot where the church stands today.
The Current Church Building
The church building you see today was built in 1893. The older brick building was taken down to make way for this new, grander structure.
Romanesque Style and Unique Design
The church was designed in a style called Romanesque Revival. This style often uses round arches, thick walls, and large towers, making buildings look strong and impressive. The church also has an "Akron plan" sanctuary. This means the seating is arranged in a semicircle around the pulpit, so everyone feels closer to the speaker.
Additions Over the Years
Over time, the church building has grown. New parts were added in 1922 and again in 1968. These additions helped the church serve its growing community better.
A Recognized Historic Place
Because of its long history and special architecture, the Broad Street United Methodist Church is considered very important. In 1984, the church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history.
