Clifford Toney (born December 17, 1958) is a former American football player. He was a defensive back, a position that helps stop the other team from scoring. Cliff Toney played for five seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Before that, he was picked by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1981 NFL draft. He also played college football at Auburn University.

Playing for the Auburn Tigers
From 1977 to 1980, Cliff Toney played college football for the Auburn Tigers. He was a standout player on their team.
Key College Achievements
In 1978, Cliff Toney was really good at catching passes thrown by the other team. He had five interceptions that year. This was one of the best records in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Because of his great play, he was named to the second-team All-SEC.
He made one interception in 1979. Then, in 1980, he again had five interceptions. This earned him another spot on the second-team All-SEC.
Cliff Toney's Professional Football Career
After college, Cliff Toney hoped to play professional football. He was drafted by an NFL team.
Joining the Atlanta Falcons
In the 1981 NFL draft, the Atlanta Falcons picked Cliff Toney. He was the 219th player chosen overall. However, he was released by the Falcons later that same year.
Playing in the Canadian Football League
Cliff Toney then moved to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He joined the Edmonton Eskimos in 1984.
Highlights with the Edmonton Eskimos
- 1984 Season: He played in 14 games. He made one interception and ran it back 88 yards for a touchdown! He also had one sack.
- 1985 Season: He played in 14 games again. He made another interception, running it back 56 yards for a touchdown.
- 1986 Season: He played in 11 games. This was a great year for interceptions, as he had five of them. He also scored another touchdown and had one sack.
- 1987 Season: He played in 10 games and made 33 tackles. He also had one interception. This year was special because the Eskimos won the 75th Grey Cup. The Grey Cup is like the Super Bowl for Canadian football! They beat the Toronto Argonauts on November 29, 1987.
- 1988 Season: This was his last season. He played in 15 games. He made 44 tackles and had four interceptions. Two of those interceptions were run back for touchdowns!
Cliff Toney had a successful career, especially with the Edmonton Eskimos, where he helped them win a championship.
