Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Clifton House, once known as Sandy Tavern, is a special old building. You can find it at 473 Bethlehem Pike in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. Today, it's a library and museum, and it's also the main office for the Fort Washington Historical Society.

A Look Back at Clifton House

The building you see today was built in 1801. But even before that, a tavern called Sandy Tavern stood on this spot. This tavern played a small but important part in American history.

Clifton House and the American Revolution

During the autumn of 1777, a big event happened nearby. George Washington and his soldiers, known as the Continental Army, camped for six weeks at a place called Whitemarsh. This was during the American Revolutionary War, when America was fighting for its freedom.

Some important officers from Washington's army stayed at the Sandy Tavern. These included Colonels Clement Biddle and Stephen Moylan, and General George Weedon. They used the tavern as a place to rest and plan during the war.

Clifton House Today

After many years, the Sandy Tavern became the Clifton House. Now, it's a place where people can learn about the past. As a library and museum, it helps tell the story of the area and its role in American history. It's a great example of how old buildings can still be useful and teach us about earlier times.
