Clement Biddle (born May 10, 1740 – died July 14, 1814) was an important Colonel during the American Revolutionary War. He played a key role in supporting the Continental Army.

Early Life and Family

Clement Biddle was born on May 10, 1740, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents were John Biddle and Sarah Owen. He had an older brother named Owen Biddle, Sr.

Clement Biddle was part of the Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers. This group believes in peace. However, Biddle helped create a volunteer company called the "Quaker Blues" to support the American cause.

He married Mary Richardson in 1764. Later, he married Rebekah Cornell, whose father was a chief justice in Rhode Island. They had several children together.

In 1766, Biddle was chosen to be a member of the American Philosophical Society. This was a group of important thinkers and scientists.

Service in the Revolutionary War

Clement Biddle was a brave soldier during the American Revolutionary War. He fought in several major battles. These included the Battle of Princeton, the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Monmouth.

He served as the Commissary General at Valley Forge. This meant he was in charge of getting food, supplies, and equipment for George Washington's army. His headquarters, or main office, was at a place called Moore Hall.

Biddle left the main army in 1780. However, in 1781, he became the quarter-master general for the Pennsylvania troops. This role also involved managing supplies and logistics for the soldiers.

After the War

After the Revolutionary War ended, Clement Biddle continued to serve his country. From 1789 to 1793, he was the first U.S. Marshal for Pennsylvania. A U.S. Marshal is a federal law enforcement officer.

In 1790, official records showed Biddle's jobs were "Notary, Scrivener, and Broker." A notary helps make legal documents official. A scrivener writes legal papers. A broker helps people buy and sell things. These jobs helped him become a wealthy man.
