A Look at Clinton's History
The area where Clinton now stands was first settled in the 1870s. James Hill and his family were among the first to arrive. Early settlers used the land mainly for grazing their animals. Even though the land was good for farming, getting drinking water was tough. They had to bring water from the Weber River.
This area had different names back then, like The Range, Sand Ridge, The Basin, and The Summit. The first school was built in 1885. It was located just south of the cemetery.
Farmers started using "dry farming" methods in Clinton in 1879. This is a way to grow crops in dry areas without much rain. By 1881, a railroad station was built, which helped the area connect with others. In 1884, a local church group was formed. It was called the Summit Basin Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The first official church ward in Clinton was set up on May 29, 1897. It was named 'The Clinton Ward'. Clinton did not become an official town until 1936. Its population grew slowly until the 1960s. In 1950, only 670 people lived in Clinton City. It took 19 more years for the city to even start its own police department.
