The Story of the Clinton House
Building a Home in Fayetteville
The Clinton House was built in 1931. It was designed in the Tudor Revival style. This style looks like old English homes. The first person to live there was H. H. Taylor. He owned the local newspaper, the Fayetteville Daily Leader.
New Owners and a Special Wedding
Later, Gilbert C. Swanson bought the house. His wife, Roberta Fulbright, was the sister of a famous senator, J. William Fulbright. On August 11, 1975, Bill Clinton bought the house for $17,200.00.
Bill and Hillary Rodham were both teaching law. They taught at the University of Arkansas School of Law. They got married in the living room of this house. Their wedding day was October 11, 1975.
Life After the Clintons
Bill Clinton became the Arkansas Attorney General in January 1977. After that, he and Hillary rented the house to law students. They sold the house in 1983.
Visiting the Clinton House Museum
What You Can See at the Museum
Today, the Clinton House operates as a museum. You can see many interesting things inside. There are items from Bill Clinton's early political campaigns. These are from before he became United States President.
The rooms are set up to look like they did in the 1970s. This helps visitors imagine what life was like then. You can also see a copy of Hillary's wedding dress. The museum also has special exhibits. These exhibits share local history or stories about the Clintons' public service.
Location and the "Billgrimage"
The museum is located on what used to be California Boulevard. In 2010, the street was renamed Clinton Drive. The Clinton House Museum is part of something called the "Billgrimage." This is a tour of places important to Bill Clinton's life.
Other stops on the "Billgrimage" include:
- The Clinton Birthplace in Hope, Arkansas. This is where Bill Clinton was born.
- The Bill Clinton Presidential Library. This library holds many records and items from his time as president.
