A Glimpse into History
The Clinton House was built around 1765. A man named Clear Everitt built it. He used to be the sheriff of the county. The land where the house stands belonged to Hugh van Kleeck. He owned a lot of land south of Main Street.
A Meeting Place?
Poughkeepsie was once the capital of New York State in 1777. During that time, the Clinton House might have been a meeting place. Lawmakers probably gathered there to discuss important matters.
New Owners and a Fire
In 1780, a man named Udney Hay bought the house. He was part of the army during the American Revolutionary War. Sadly, in 1783, a fire badly damaged the house. Udney Hay had to rent another house nearby. He even asked George Washington for help to fix his home. But in 1786, he lost the house because of money problems.
Saving the Clinton House
By the year 1900, the Clinton House was in poor condition. It was falling apart. A group called the Daughters of the American Revolution bought it. They are a group of women who care about American history. They then gave the house to the people of New York State. They presented it to the Governor of New York at the time, Theodore Roosevelt.
The house was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's a very important historic site.
The Clinton House Today
Today, the Clinton House is still a busy place. It is used for the offices and library of the Dutchess County Historical Society. This society helps preserve local history. One room in the house is still kept for the Daughters of the American Revolution. They continue to use it for their meetings and activities.
