Clinton Kelly (born June 15, 1808 – died June 19, 1875) was an important early pioneer in what is now the U.S. state of Oregon. He was a minister and helped settle the area.
Kelly was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, in 1808. His parents were Samuel and Nancy Kelly. In 1827, he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and became a pastor.

Moving West to Oregon
In 1847, Clinton Kelly and his family decided to move west. They traveled to the Oregon Country with his brothers, Albert and Thomas. They arrived in late 1848. By then, Oregon had become a U.S. territory.
The family first stayed in a cabin on James B. Stephens' land. Later, they settled in what is now Oregon City. There, Kelly bought his own piece of land. He passed away in 1875 at 67 years old.
Kelly's Family Life
Clinton Kelly had a large family. In August 1827, he married Mary Baston. They had five sons together. Mary passed away in 1837.
A year later, Kelly married Jane Burns. They had one daughter, Mary Jane. Jane died shortly after their daughter was born.
Kelly married his third wife, Moriah Maldon Crain, in 1840. Clinton and Moriah had nine children together. Moriah passed away in 1863.
Notable Children
Many of Clinton Kelly's children became well-known. His son, Penumbra Kelly, was a sheriff. He also became a U.S. Marshal for the district. Penumbra also served four terms in the Oregon State Legislature.
Another son, Dr. Richmond Kelly, was a famous citizen of Portland, Oregon. The Richmond neighborhood in Portland is named after him.
Kelly's Legacy in Portland
Several places in Portland are named after Clinton Kelly. These include Clinton Street and Clinton Park. Albert Kelly Park is named after his brother, Albert Kelly.
Clinton Kelly Elementary School in Lents is also named after him. Kelly also donated land to start Clinton Kelly School. This school later became Cleveland High School.
Connection to Mount Tabor
Kelly's family played a big part in the history of the Mt. Tabor area of Portland. It is thought that Kelly's son, Plympton, might have influenced the naming of Mt. Tabor. It was named after Mount Tabor in Palestine.
Kelly Butte was once part of Plympton Kelly's land.
