History of Clyde
Building a New Town
Clyde was first built in 1917. The United States Shipping Board helped fund its creation. They gave a loan to the Pacific Coast Shipbuilding Company. The goal was to build a "company town." A company town is a place where a company owns most of the homes and stores. It is built mainly for its workers.
Town Design and Architects
The Shipping Board chose a famous architect named Bernard Maybeck. He was in charge of planning the new town. He designed the main hotel and about 200 of the first homes. Another architect, George Applegarth, also helped. He drew many of the detailed plans for the town's buildings.
