The Story of Clydebank FC
Clydebank Football Club started in 1874. It began as a fun winter activity for members of the Clydebank Cricket Club. This made it the very first football club to use the "Clydebank" name. Unlike later clubs, this team was located in Rutherglen. This area is south-east of Glasgow, right by the River Clyde.
Early Matches and Competitions
The club's first recorded games were in the 1875–76 season. They played against other good teams like Cambuslang and Caledonian.
In the 1879–80 season, Clydebank FC joined the Scottish Football Association (SFA). The SFA is the main group that organizes football in Scotland. Joining meant they could play in the Scottish Cup for the first time. The Scottish Cup is a big knockout competition for teams across Scotland. In their first match, they lost 2–1 to Airdrie Excelsior.
During the same season, Clydebank FC also helped start the Lanarkshire Football Association. This was a local football group for teams in the Lanarkshire area. They played in the first ever Lanarkshire Cup. They lost 4–2 to Shotts F.C. in the second round of that competition.
Later Years
Even though the club was more active, they never played in the Scottish Cup or Lanarkshire Cup again. After 1886, they continued to play "junior football." This means they played at a lower level of the sport.
What They Wore
When Clydebank FC first started, their team uniform was simple. They wore blue shirts and white shorts. By 1879, they changed their look. Their new kit had red and blue "stripes." Back then, "stripes" often meant hoops, so they likely wore red and blue hoops on their shirts.
Where They Played
Clydebank FC's very first recorded matches were played on Glasgow Green. This is a large park in Glasgow. Later, in 1876, they started playing their home games at Phoenix Park in Rutherglen. This football ground was located near the Dalmarnock Bridge.
