Clydie Mae King (born August 21, 1943 – died January 7, 2019) was an American singer. She was famous for singing background vocals for many popular artists. Clydie also recorded her own songs. In the 1970s, she used the stage name Brown Sugar. Her song "Loneliness (Will Bring Us Together Again)" reached number 44 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1973.

Life of a Singer: Clydie King's Journey
Clydie King was born in Dallas, Texas. After her mother passed away, her older sister raised her. Clydie started singing in her local church. In the early 1950s, her family moved to Los Angeles.
Starting Her Music Career
A songwriter named Richard Berry discovered Clydie. She began her recording career in 1956 with a group called Little Clydie and the Teens. Later, she joined Ray Charles' group, Raelettes, and sang with them for three years. She also helped with recordings by producer Phil Spector in the early 1960s.
Clydie released her own songs, called singles, with record labels like Specialty Records and Kent Records. Her solo song "'Bout Love" reached number 45 on the R&B chart in 1971.
Becoming a Top Background Vocalist
Clydie King became a very popular session singer. This means she was often hired to sing background vocals for other artists. She worked with Venetta Fields and Sherlie Matthews. She sang with many famous musicians, including B.B. King, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, and Joe Walsh.
She was also a member of a group called The Blackberries with Venetta Fields and Sherlie Matthews. Clydie sang on Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. This tour was even made into a movie! In 1971, she sang the main vocal on the song "Walkin' By the River" for the Beaver and Krause album Gandarva.
Clydie King also sang background vocals on the famous song "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. She sang alongside Merry Clayton on this hit.
Family Life and Later Years
Clydie King was married and had children. She had three sons named Christopher, Randy, and Magge, and a daughter named Delores.
Clydie King passed away on January 7, 2019. She was 75 years old.
