The Coburger Hut (called Coburger Hütte in German) is a mountain hut in the Mieming Range in Tyrol, Austria. It's owned by the Coburg Branch of the German Alpine Club. The hut is located very close to the beautiful Drachensee lake. It's usually open from June to early October and has a special room for winter visitors.

History of the Coburger Hut

The idea for building the Coburger Hut came from a climber named Ferdinand Kilger in 1890. The Coburg branch of the German Alpine Club, which started in 1879, took on the project in 1895.

Building and Early Improvements

The first hut was finished in 1901. After it was built, they added important things like a water connection. The water came from a nearby lake called Grünsteinsee, which has since dried up. They also added an electrical generator and a telephone line by 1908.

Renovations and Modernization

After the First World War, the hut was made bigger for the first time. In 1962, a special cable car was built to carry supplies up to the hut. For the hut's 75th anniversary, new toilets were added.

More big renovations happened in the 1980s. This was because local officials said the building needed repairs and was a fire risk. In the 1990s, the hut's electricity, water, and waste systems were updated to meet new environmental rules.

From 2009 to 2011, the Coburger Hut was modernized again. They did general repairs and added a new power station and a room for seminars or meetings.

How to Reach the Coburger Hut

You can reach the Coburger Hut from the Austrian village of Ehrwald in a few different ways. Some paths are easier, while others are more challenging.

Hoher Gang Route

The Hoher Gang route from Ehrwald to the Coburger Hut is for experienced hikers. You need to be very steady on your feet and not afraid of heights. This path has cables in some places to help you.

The route starts at 1,100 meters high. It crosses the Gaißbach stream and then leads to Seebensee lake. From there, you climb about 300 meters in zigzags to reach the hut. This walk takes about 3 hours.

Seeben Klettersteig (Via Ferrata)

The Seeben Klettersteig is a special climbing path with fixed cables. It starts about 45 minutes from the Ehrwalder Almbahn cable car station, near the Seeben Waterfall. This route follows the Gaißbach stream to the Seebensee lake.

This path is very difficult (rated D+) and only for experienced climbers. It has cables in very exposed areas to keep you safe. The entire journey takes about 3 hours.

Ehrwalder Alm: The Easiest Way

The simplest way to get to the hut is by going up to the Ehrwalder Alm. You can take the Ehrwalder Almbahn cable car from Ehrwald (1,000 meters) up to 1,502 meters.

From the Ehrwalder Alm, there is a small mountain road. This road passes the Seebenalm and Seebensee lake with gentle zigzags. It then leads directly to the Coburger Hut. This walk takes about 2 hours from the Ehrwalder Alm.

Immensteig Route

The Immensteig path branches off the Ehrwalder Alm path about 300 meters above the cable car station. It crosses grassy areas and then goes along the eastern side of the Seeben rock faces. This route is also protected by cables in some parts.

It joins the main track from Ehrwalder Alm to Seebenalm at a shelter called Ganghofers Rast. This route takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.

Other Ways to Get There

  • From Biberwier: You can hike via the Biberwierer Scharte mountain pass (2,000 meters). This takes about 3 hours.
  • From Obsteig-Arzkasten: You can go via the Grünsteinscharte mountain pass (2,200 meters). This takes about 4 hours.

Nearby Mountain Peaks

Many mountain peaks are close to the Coburger Hut, making it a great base for climbing. Here are some of them and how long it takes to reach their summits:

  • Vorderer Tajakopf (2,452 meters): 2 hours
  • Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze (2,412 meters): 2 hours
  • Hinterer Tajakopf (2,408 meters): 2 hours
  • Vorderer Drachenkopf (2,301 meters): 1 hour
  • Wampeter Schrofen (2,520 meters): 2.5 hours

Hut Crossings

You can also hike from the Coburger Hut to other huts or mountain inns.

  • To the Breitenkopf Hut: Go over the Hinterer Tajatörl and Igelsscharte passes. This takes about 3 hours.
  • To the Lehnberghaus or Berggasthof Sunnalm: Go over the Grünsteinscharte pass. Each takes about 3 hours. Note that this route was changed in 2012 due to rockfalls.
  • To the Knorr Hut: Go over the Gaistal and Gatterl. This takes about 5–6 hours.

Climbing Gardens Near the Hut

There are two special climbing areas, called climbing gardens, close to the Coburger Hut. These are places with rock climbing routes already set up.

Coburger Hütte Climbing Garden

This climbing garden is only about 5 minutes from the hut. It has about 10 climbing routes. The difficulty levels range from 4 to 6.

Colosseum Climbing Garden

This climbing garden is about 20 minutes away, towards the bottom of the Drachenkopf mountain. It has five climbing routes. The difficulty levels here are higher, ranging from 7 to 9-.
