Cofre de Perote is an inactive volcano in the Mexican state of Veracruz. It is also known by its older names, Naupa-Tecutépetl and Nauhcampatépetl]]. These names come from the Nahuatl language and mean something like "Place of Four Mountains."
This volcano is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, which is a chain of volcanoes across Mexico. It is also where this volcanic belt meets the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. Cofre de Perote stands tall at about 4,282 meters (14,049 feet) above sea level. This makes it the eighth highest mountain in Mexico!
Cofre de Perote is a special type of volcano called a shield volcano. Imagine a warrior's shield lying on the ground – that's how it looks! It has gentle slopes, unlike the cone shape of other volcanoes like Pico de Orizaba, which is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) away. The name "Cofre" means "coffer" or "chest" in Spanish. This name refers to a rock sticking out near the top of the mountain, which looks like a chest. The nearby town of Perote, Veracruz is where the mountain gets its name.
In 1937, the Mexican government made the area around the volcano a protected place. It is now known as Cofre de Perote National Park (in Spanish: Parque Nacional Cofre de Perote). This helps protect the nature and wildlife there.
