Most of the land in Cohoctah Township is used for farming. There are three small communities here:
Cohoctah Community

You can find a gas station, a small post office, and a machine shop here. This community started around a grain elevator in 1886. The old grain elevator is still there, but it is not used anymore.
Cohoctah Center Community
Cohoctah Center is another unincorporated community. Even though it's called "Center," it's a bit northwest of the middle of Cohoctah Township. Lyman Boughton and Gilbert Prentiss first settled here in 1833. This town was also known as "Sprungtown" because of a well-known citizen named Isaac Sprung. The township hall is located here, but there are no shops or businesses.
Oak Grove Community

How Community Names Changed
Over time, the names of these communities shifted.
- In 1875, old maps showed the community we now call Cohoctah Center as Cohoctah. This area was often called the "school section" because rural schools were usually built in this central part of a township. The maps from 1875 did not show any community where the current Cohoctah is located.
- By 1895, maps still called the current Cohoctah Center by the name Cohoctah. However, a new north-south railroad line was built through the eastern part of the township. A train station was built, and a new community called East Cohoctah appeared where the current Cohoctah is.
- In 1915, the community that was once called Cohoctah (and was the school section) became known as Cohoctah Center. The community at the railroad station, which was East Cohoctah, then became known as Cohoctah. So, the main business center of the township moved from the school area to the railroad station.
