The Story of Coitsville Township
Coitsville Township got its name from Daniel Coit. He was part of the Connecticut Land Company. Even though he probably never lived there, he sent people to survey the land in 1798.
Early Settlers and Farming
The first European-American settler, Amos Loveland, arrived in 1798. By 1801, many more settlers began to move to the area. One early settler was Alexander McGuffey, who moved his family there around 1800. His son, William Holmes McGuffey, grew up in Coitsville. He later became famous for writing the McGuffey Readers, which were popular school books.
The soil in Coitsville Township was excellent for farming. Because of this, most early settlers worked as farmers.
Building the Community
The first school house was built in 1807 or 1808. It was a small log building located in the northeastern part of the township. In the early days, Coitsville also had several sawmills and a gristmill. As the community grew, two stores, a tannery, and two blacksmith shops were added.
Coitsville Township is the only township with this name in the entire state of Ohio.
