History of Campbell

In 1902, the Youngstown Iron Sheet and Tube Company built a factory. It was near the Mahoning River in what was then Coitsville Township. A town grew around this factory. It was called East Youngstown because it was southeast of downtown Youngstown.

The village became an official town in 1908. Many young immigrants came to work in the steel industry. The population grew quickly. A lot of the immigrants who came to the village were from Greece.

The factory was later known as the Campbell Works. It had many large machines for making steel. These included blast furnaces and open hearth furnaces. They also had mills to shape the metal. From 1937 to 1979, molten iron was sent from Campbell to another company plant.

In 1916, workers at the East Youngstown plant went on strike. They were unhappy with their working conditions. During the strike, much of the town's business area was burned down. The National Guard troops arrived to stop the riots.

After these events, the company built special townhouses. They were called "Iron Soup" houses. These were some of the first prefabricated concrete homes ever built. In 1926, the city's name changed to Campbell. This was to honor James Anson Campbell, who led the iron company.

On September 19, 1977, the Campbell Works factory suddenly closed. About 5,000 workers lost their jobs. This day is remembered locally as "Black Monday."

Campbell is sometimes called the "City of Churches." This is because there are many different kinds of religious buildings there.
