Cold Fell is a lovely hill, or 'fell', located in the western part of the famous Lake District in England. It's a great place for a walk because it's quite easy to climb. You can reach it from a road known as Cold Fell Road, which connects two villages called Ennerdale Bridge and Calder Bridge. Many people who work at the nearby Sellafield site use this road when they travel from Cockermouth.

What is Cold Fell Like?

Easy to Explore

Cold Fell is covered mostly in grass, and it's not very steep anywhere, which makes it a gentle climb for hikers. The very top of the fell is quite flat. From the summit, you can see amazing views of the coastline of west Cumbria and the Sellafield site.

Wild Horses of the Fells

One of the special things about Cold Fell is that it's home to a group of wild horses. These horses roam freely across Cold Fell and other nearby fells. Seeing them can be a really cool part of your visit!

Cold Fell in Books

Alfred Wainwright's View

Cold Fell is even featured in a book by a famous fell-walker and author named Alfred Wainwright. His book, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, has a whole chapter about Cold Fell.

Wainwright was known for giving very detailed routes for climbing fells. But for Cold Fell, he was a bit different! He didn't give a specific path. Instead, he wrote something funny: "If, with the aid of the map only, you cannot find the top of Cold Fell, then take some good advice, old man, and pack it in." This means he thought it was so easy to find that you should be able to do it with just a map! He also noted that the height of Cold Fell is about 291 meters (or 955 feet).
