Coleman Alexander Young II (born October 18, 1982) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He is currently a member of the Detroit City Council. Before this, he served in the Michigan Senate and the Michigan House of Representatives.
In the Michigan Senate, he represented the 1st district. This area included several cities like Ecorse, Gibraltar, River Rouge, Riverview, Trenton, Woodhaven, Wyandotte, and part of Detroit. He helped lead various committees, including those for local government, elections, and transportation. He also served as the Senate Assistant Minority Caucus Chair.
From 2007 to 2010, Young was a representative in the 4th District of the Michigan House of Representatives. This district covered the Lower East Side of Detroit, including parts of Downtown and Midtown. During his time in the House, he worked on committees for insurance, government relations, labor, and transportation.
Young has run for mayor of Detroit twice, in 2009 and 2017. He was the runner-up in the 2017 election. In 2018, he also ran for a seat in the U.S. Congress but did not win the primary election. In 2022, he was elected to the Detroit City Council.

About Coleman Young II's Life
Coleman Young II was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is the son of Coleman Young, who was a former mayor of Detroit. He grew up in California. When he was 12, his father asked him to carry on the family name and legacy.
In 2005, Young moved back to Detroit. He is a member of St. Paul Church of God in Christ. As of 2013, he hosted a live radio show called The Young Effect.
Education and Learning
Young finished high school at P.A.L. Charter Academy High School in San Bernardino, California. After high school, he went to Azusa Pacific University, a private Christian college in California. In 2005, he moved to Wayne State University to finish his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. He continued to study part-time at Wayne State as of 2018.
Coleman Young II's Political Journey
Young began his political career in 2005 as an intern for Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson. He also worked for the Detroit City Council's research department.
In 2006, Young ran for the first time to become a representative in the 4th District of Michigan's House of Representatives.
Making a Difference: Laws Young Helped Pass
In 2009, Coleman Young II helped pass an important law called HB 4327, also known as the Tisha Prater Act. This law helps protect women from unfair treatment at work if they are pregnant, have recently given birth, or have related medical conditions. The law was named after Detroit Police Officer Tisha Prater, who faced problems when she was denied paid leave after telling her department she was pregnant. This act ensures that pregnant women have the same protections as others.
