Coleman Alexander Young II (born Joel Loving II on October 18, 1982) is an American politician. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Currently, he serves on the Detroit City Council. He also used to be a member of the Michigan Senate.

In the Michigan Senate, he represented the 1st district. This area included several cities like Ecorse, Gibraltar, and parts of Detroit. From 2011 to 2014, Young held leadership roles. He was the Senate Assistant Minority Caucus Chair. He also served as the Senate Assistant Minority Floor Leader.

Before that, from 2007 to 2010, Young was a representative in the Michigan House of Representatives. He represented the 4th District. This district covered the Lower East Side of Detroit. It also included parts of Downtown and Midtown. While in the House, Young was the vice chair of the Insurance Committee. He also worked on committees for Intergovernmental and Regional Affairs, Labor, and Transportation.

Young ran for Mayor of Detroit twice, in 2009 and 2017, but did not win. In 2018, he ran for a seat in the U.S. Congress. He lost the primary election. In 2022, Young was elected to the Detroit City Council.

About Coleman Young II

Coleman Young II was born Joel Loving II in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is the only son of Coleman Young, who was a former Mayor of Detroit. His mother is Annivory Calvert. Young grew up in California.

In 2002, Young shared that he changed his name to Coleman Young II when he was 13 years old. He did this to honor his father's memory. In 2017, he mentioned that his name was changed to Joel Loving when he was six. Young said his father called him when he was twelve. His father "basically asked [him] to carry on the name and the legacy."

In 2005, Young moved back to Detroit. He is a member of St. Paul Church of God in Christ. As of 2013, Young hosted a live call-in show. It was called The Young Effect.

His Education Journey

Young finished high school at P.A.L. Charter Academy High School. This school is located in San Bernardino, California. After high school, he went to Azusa Pacific University. This is a private Christian college in Azusa, California.

In 2005, Young moved to Wayne State University. He went there to finish his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. As of 2018, Young was still attending Wayne State as a part-time student.

In 2005, Young started working as an intern. He worked for Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson. He also worked for the Detroit City Council Research & Analysis Division.

In 2006, Young ran for a vacant seat. This was in the Michigan House of Representatives. He ran for the 4th District.

In 2017, Young ran for Mayor of Detroit. He was defeated by Mike Duggan. Duggan received 72% of the votes. Young received 28% of the votes.

In 2009, Young helped pass a law called HB 4327. This law is also known as the Tisha Prater Act. It helps protect women from unfair treatment. This includes women affected by pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. The law was named after Detroit Police Officer Tisha Prater. She was denied paid leave from work after telling her department she was pregnant.
