Colfax is a small town in Indiana, United States. It is located in Clinton County. In 2010, about 691 people lived there.

The town was first called Midway. This was because it was halfway between Chicago and Louisville on the IC&L Railroad. Many train lines crossed here, making Colfax a busy place for people to switch trains. Later, in 1857, the town was renamed to honor Schuyler Colfax, who was a Vice President of the United States.

History of Colfax

Colfax was started in 1849 by Montgomery Stroud. It was first known as Midway because of its location on the railroad. In 1853, a post office opened in the town and was named Colfax. By December 1857, the people living there asked for the town's name to be changed to Colfax as well.

By 1861, Colfax had grown quite a bit. It had two churches, two general stores, a hotel, and a saw mill. About 200 people lived there at that time.

In 1869, the town held an election to become an official town. Most people voted yes. In 1870, Colfax had 187 residents. But when the Vandalia railroad was built through the town in 1870-1871, Colfax grew very quickly. By 1880, the population had reached 638 people.

Two important buildings in Colfax are the Colfax Carnegie Library and the Rosenberger Building. These buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special places that are important to history.
