Discovering College View's Past
College View started way back in 1891. That's when Union College was built just southeast of Lincoln. A small village quickly grew up around the college.
Early Days of the Village
The first post office in College View opened in 1891. By 1892, the village had grown quite a bit, with about 1,000 people living there. Because it was growing so fast, College View officially became an incorporated village that same year.
College View During World War II
During World War II, College View played a small but important role. Medical recruits, like soldiers training to be medics, marched and trained right there. There are even old pictures showing soldiers, including a famous one named Desmond T. Doss, marching near the Clocktower on the Union College campus.
Joining the City of Lincoln
By 1929, College View had grown to nearly 3,000 people. The city of Lincoln was also getting bigger and expanding south. In 1929, Lincoln officially added College View to its city limits. This process is called "annexation."
College View Today
Even though it's now part of Lincoln, College View is still a lively and important neighborhood. It's home to many local businesses and cool historic buildings. Union College is still there, educating students just like it has for over a hundred years!
