Collinsville, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Collinsville is a small, quiet community in Solano County, California, United States. It's located right where the Sacramento River flows into Suisun Bay. Because there isn't a bridge connecting it to the busier Contra Costa County across the river, Collinsville stays a bit separate and peaceful. In the 1980s, there was a plan to build a large chemical factory here, but it never happened. The community's ZIP code is 94585, and its phone area code is 707.

Collinsville became a community around 1859. A person named C. J. Collins bought the land then. Later, in 1867, S. C. Bradshaw bought the land and changed its name to Newport. He tried to sell parts of the land to people on the East Coast. He told them it would become a big railroad town.

However, the land was sold again in 1872 to E. I. Upham. He changed the name back to Collinsville.

Long ago, a passenger train line used to go through Collinsville. This line connected Sacramento and San Francisco. Before bridges were built, the train would uncouple at Collinsville. Then, parts of the train would be pulled across the Delta by a barge. This took several trips. Once on the other side, near Pittsburg, California, the train would be put back together. After that, it would continue its journey to San Francisco.

More recently, on July 4, 2014, a fire caused a lot of damage. Nearly half of the community was lost due to this fire.
