The Colonel Joseph Taylor House is a historic house in Cambridge, Ohio, United States. It was the home of a very important person in Cambridge during the late 1800s. Today, it is recognized as a special historic site.

Who Was Colonel Joseph Taylor?

The Colonel Joseph Taylor House was built for Joseph Danner Taylor. He was a well-known local newspaperman and politician. He also served as a judge in the U.S. Army after the American Civil War. Later, he became a U.S. Representative, which means he helped make laws for the country.

A Community Leader

Joseph Taylor was known for being very smart, even when he was young. People in Cambridge remembered him as a great example of a good citizen. He was also praised for strongly supporting the country during the Civil War. This was important because many people were unsure or even against the war at that time.

The House's Unique Style

The Colonel Joseph Taylor House was designed by Samuel Hannaford. It combines two interesting architectural styles: the Queen Anne and the Stick-Eastlake styles.

Building Materials and Design

The house is made of wood and sits on a strong stone foundation. Its roof has two parts: some sections are covered with slate, and others use asphalt shingles.

The front of the house is two and a half stories tall. It has three main parts that make it look special:

  • The middle section features a fancy porch with parts that stick out, called eaves. Above the porch, there are two smaller windows on the second floor.
  • The right side of the house (when you look at it from the street) is simpler. It has flat walls, a triangular roof section called a gable on the third floor, and one window on each story.
  • The left side is three stories tall. It has a large bay window on the first and second floors. A bay window is a window that sticks out from the main wall of the house. The third floor has a noticeable overhang, which means it extends out further than the floor below.

The entire building is topped with a multi-part gabled roof, which means it has several triangular roof sections.

A Historic Landmark Today

In 2008, the Colonel Joseph Taylor House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized as an important historical building. It qualified for this honor because of its unique architecture and its connection to Joseph Taylor. At that time, the house had been turned into a bed and breakfast called the Colonel Taylor Inn.
