The Colony of the Queen Charlotte Islands was a territory claimed by the British Empire. It included the islands now known as Haida Gwaii. This colony existed from 1853 to 1858.
In 1858, it joined with another British territory to form the Colony of British Columbia. Much later, in 2010, the islands were officially renamed Haida Gwaii. This name honors the Haida people who have lived there for thousands of years.
Why the Colony Was Created
The British government, specifically the Colonial Office, decided to create this colony. They did this because many American ships were coming to the islands. This happened after a gold rush started on Moresby Island in 1851.
The British wanted to show that the islands belonged to them. They hoped to control the gold rush activity.
How the Colony Was Run
The Colony of the Queen Charlotte Islands never had its own separate government or a capital city. It was mostly a name on paper.
The only person in charge was James Douglas. He was already the Governor of Vancouver Island at the same time. In 1852, he was also made the Lieutenant-Governor of the Queen Charlotte Islands. This meant he was the Queen's representative there.
Life in the Colony
Even though it was called a British colony, very few Europeans actually settled there. The gold rush didn't last long, ending in 1853. After that, there wasn't much reason for Europeans to stay.
Explorers visited the islands as late as 1859. But they didn't find a good place for a permanent European town.
The main people living on the islands before and during this time were the Haida people. They were the only permanent residents of the islands.
