The Santa Rita rocket frog (scientific name: Leucostethus fraterdanieli) is a small frog that belongs to the family Dendrobatidae. This family is known for many colorful frogs, including some famous poison dart frogs. However, not all frogs in this family are poisonous.

This special frog lives only in the Andes mountains in Colombia. This means it is endemic to Colombia, which means it is found nowhere else in the world! It lives on the ground near streams in two main types of forests: cloud forests (which are often misty and wet) and dry tropical forests.

Where the Santa Rita Rocket Frog Lives

The Santa Rita rocket frog is found in the western parts of the Central Andes mountains and on both sides of the Western Andes mountains in Colombia. These mountain ranges are part of the larger Andes system that stretches across South America.

It likes to live in places where it can stay close to water, like small streams. This is important for frogs because they need moisture to keep their skin wet and to lay their eggs.

What Threats Does It Face?

Sadly, the Santa Rita rocket frog is facing some big challenges. Its home, or habitat, is being lost. This happens because of two main reasons:

  • Agriculture: Forests are cut down to make space for farms and growing crops.
  • Logging: Trees are cut down for wood, which destroys the frog's forest home.

When their habitat disappears, these frogs have fewer places to live, find food, and reproduce. This makes it harder for them to survive and thrive in the wild. Protecting their forest homes is very important to help these unique frogs continue to live in Colombia.
