Colotenango is a town and a special area called a municipality in Guatemala. It is part of the Huehuetenango department. A department is like a state or province.
Colotenango is located high up, about 1,590 meters (5,217 feet) above sea level. In 2018, about 34,834 people lived there. The municipality covers an area of 62 square kilometers (24 square miles). Every year, Colotenango celebrates its main festival from August 12th to 15th.
This area is also home to two important holy sites. They are called Tuikalajan and Tuisanmarcos.
People and Culture
Colotenango is a place where many Maya people live. They keep their traditions alive. Most people in Colotenango speak the Mam language. This is one of the many Mayan languages.
When it comes to religion, about two-thirds of the people are Catholic. The other thirty percent follow the Evangelical faith.
