Colt Island (Irish: Inis Coilt) is the closest and smallest of three low-lying islands located near Skerries, in Fingal, County Dublin, Ireland. This island is not home to any people and is a quiet spot off the coast.
What's in a Name?
The original name for the island in the Irish language is Inis Coilt. We don't know exactly where this name came from, but some people think it might be connected to a type of food. The English name, Colt Island, isn't a direct translation from the Irish, because the Irish word for a young horse (a colt) is actually bromach!
Nature on Colt Island
Colt Island is a small island with low cliffs, located about half a kilometer (0.5 km) from the mainland. The island is covered with different types of plants, including grasses, thorny brambles, and other species like hogweed.
Just like the other two islands near Skerries, Colt Island is a very important place for birds. Many seabirds come here to build their nests and raise their young. In the winter, different kinds of water fowl also visit the island, making it a busy spot for wildlife all year round.
