Colter Falls, also known as Coulter Falls, is a waterfall located on the Missouri River. You can find it in north-central Montana, in the United States. It is one of several waterfalls that make up the Great Falls of the Missouri.

Today, Colter Falls is usually hidden underwater. This is because of the Rainbow Dam, which creates a large pool of water behind it. This type of dam is called a "run-of-the-river" dam. This means it lets most of the river's water flow through it. Because of this, the water level behind the dam rarely drops low enough to show the falls. Even during very dry times, it's rare to see Colter Falls.

Discovering Colter Falls

The famous Lewis and Clark Expedition explored this area a long time ago. They visited these falls and were the first to describe a type of fish called the Westslope cutthroat trout living there. However, they did not give the falls a name.

Later, a man named Paris Gibson named the falls. He was the person who founded the city of Great Falls, Montana.
